The Dimebox user interface consists of many modules that include topics like: transaction reports, analytics, administration of various entities and billing options. In order to get the most out of the different modules, it is important to present this in an intuitive, but also elegant way. We have solved this challenge by applying Google’s Material Design.
Google describes Material Design as follows:
“A visual language for our users that synthesizes the classic principles of good design with the innovation and possibility of technology and science.”
In other words: Google’s Material Design is a single underlying design system that allows for a unified experience across all platforms and device sizes.
This design system consists of a complete set of web components such as: navigation bars, headers, cards and notifications. These components have passed a number of usability tests, making sure that every user understands how they work and what information they convey without the need of further explanation. Not only because Google created it, but because there is a large number of companies, which have adopted these principles and rely on them for the products and services they offer. This means users come across Material design components often and are familiar with how they work and what they do.

Having a rich set of highly customisable features within our user interface makes it important to be able to highlight specific elements where we want the attention of the user to be. Even more importantly, we should also be able to create enough tranquility for other components shown on the screen. Achieving a desired task now becomes a pleasurable experience, not a challenge of finding the right button. We achieved this effect by using Material Design’ “cards”. Every card is responsible for a single data set or a single action. This allows our users to have an easily digestible screen with content.
The userbase of Dimebox consists of people with varying roles, but also coming from different types of organisations. Ranging from CFOs to fraud prevention analysts and from service desk employees to growth hackers of e-commerce platforms. Google’s Material design helped us realising a frictionless onboarding process for all of them. A small learning curve allows for new organisations to get end- to-end understanding of the platform in days. Trust us, our support department has little to no questions on “how it’s done” basis. We used to be concerned about whether extending existing features or adding new ones will slow down the work of our clients, until they get to know how to use them. It turned out to be just the opposite!
As a white-label payment platform it is crucial to be able to easily theme the platform specific to the given client, allowing them to keep their well established branding in place. We know that this is a big challenge, and by using Material Design we created a platform where we have all the freedom and control to do just that.
We created a user interface that is future-proof and allows for quick understanding of how things work. The result of following the principles of Google’s Material Design specifications is a usable and intuitive platform that is also aesthetically pleasing.
